Red Cards Change the Game
The Colorado Rapids showed real grit on Saturday night, beating Sporting Kansas City 2-0 in Commerce City. It wasn’t a walk in the park. Yahoo Sports MLS reports the whole thing shifted when Sporting KC’s Kwaku Agyabeng got shown the red in the 38th minute. That left the visitors playing with a man down for the bulk of the match. Colorado took full advantage of the extra man to control the pace and score two goals. Reggie Cannon notched his first goal of the season in the 65th minute with a header from an assist by Youssef Maziz.
He’s now scored four goals in 111 appearances for his teams.
Hansen Shuts the Door
Goalkeeper Nico Hansen was the wall that kept Sporting KC from scoring at any point. He turned away three shots on goal to secure the clean sheet for the Rapids. According to Yahoo Sports MLS, Hansen has kept four clean sheets across 10 starts this season. His seven career clean sheets show he can handle the pressure when the game is on the line. Rafael Navarro added the second goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal the victory. Navarro scored his 10th goal of the campaign with an assist from Paxten Aaronson. Aaronson has now provided all six of his career assists in just this current season. The Rapids played smart football and punished Sporting KC for their mistakes on the field.
This result sends a clear message to the rest of the league about Colorado’s resilience. They are 8-10-1 on the season and they just beat a team that has been struggling badly. Sporting KC has lost five of its last six matches and has been outscored by seven goals during that stretch. The visitors were also beaten twice by the Rapids last year, so there is a pattern of dominance here.
The Rapids will host Los Angeles FC on Wednesday to keep this momentum going. It’s a tough test against a strong opponent, but the team has shown it can fight back. The red cards hurt Sporting KC, but Colorado still had to finish the job with two goals. Navarro and Cannon proved they can step up when the team needs them most. Hansen’s performance in goal was the difference maker that kept the score at 2-0. This win gives the fans something to cheer about as the season moves forward.
