The Comeback That Almost Wasn’t

Orlando City held a two-goal lead before the final whistle blew. Most teams would have held on tight. Instead, they let Minnesota United score three unanswered goals to force a wild 3-3 draw. The turning point came in the dying seconds of the match. Tyrese Spicer netted the equalizer just three minutes into stoppage time. This single strike erased the pain of a blown lead and saved a point on the road.

The game took place on Saturday night in St. Paul. Daryl Dike scored early to give Orlando a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. It was his first goal of the season and his first start. Antoine Griezmann added a second goal in the 64th minute to make it 2-0. Per Yahoo Sports MLS, Griezmann used a pass from Justin Ellis to find the net. That was his fourth goal in just seven MLS appearances.

Minnesota United refused to stay down. In the 71st minute, Marcus Caldeira scored after assists from Kelvin Yeboah and Kyle Duncan. Defender Anthony Markanich tied the game at 2-2 just three minutes later. Yeboah then scored his 11th goal of the season to put Minnesota ahead 3-2. The visitors had two saves from goalkeeper Drake Callender. Maxime Crépeau made five saves for Orlando to keep them in the fight.

How the Lead Vanished

The loss of a two-goal cushion is a painful lesson for any squad. Orlando finished the month with a record of 1-2-2. They had just come off a 5-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. That high score created a false sense of security. The team traveled to St. Paul for their first trip there since 2023.

The stats show a team that can score but struggles to hold ground. Daryl Dike’s goal was a bright spot in the first half. Antoine Griezmann proved his worth immediately with a quick impact. Yet, the defense could not stop the flood of goals in the second half. Minnesota United finished their August run with a 1-1-3 record. They managed to turn a deficit into a lead through sheer persistence.

The final score of 3-3 reflects a game with very little margin for error. Spicer’s goal was his career-high sixth for the season. He used assists from Griezmann and Iván Angulo to seal the draw. The assist from Angulo was crucial in the final moments. It showed the depth of talent available to the Orlando coaching staff.

A draw is better than a loss, but it feels like a loss when you hold a lead. The team needs to learn how to close out games. They cannot rely on late heroics every week. The defense must step up when the offense slows down. Minnesota United showed that they will attack until the clock hits zero.

Orlando hosts San Diego FC next on Saturday. They need to bring the same energy but better focus. The players must trust their ability to protect a lead. The fans want to see a team that finishes strong. This game proved they have the skill to score. Now they must prove they have the grit to defend.

The month of August was a mixed bag for the club. They started strong but ended with a draw that could have been a win. The upcoming game against San Diego FC will be a test of character. Can they build on the scoring or will they repeat the defensive errors? The answer lies in the next nine days.
