Atlanta United Ends Home Winless Streak With 3-1 Win Over Toronto

Atlanta United finally broke its six-game home winless streak with a decisive 3-1 victory over Toronto FC. Here is why this win matters for the future of the club.

Toronto FC’s Comeback Streak Ends In Atlanta With 3-1 Loss

Toronto FC's playoff hopes died Sunday in Atlanta. Coach Robin Fraser admits soft goals killed their season. A hard look at a team that ran out of time.

Atlanta United finally broke a six-game winless run at home on Sunday night. The team beat Toronto FC by a score of 3-1 in a game that mattered for pride even if the playoffs were out of reach. Miguel Almirón and Alexey Miranchuk each scored a goal and added an assist to their totals. Cooper Sanchez also found the back of the net to help seal the win.

Before this defeat, Toronto had accumulated points in four of their previous five games when the win arrived. That streak ended as soon as the clock started in Atlanta. Toronto FC is now out of playoff contention for the sixth straight season. The loss means the visitors will miss the postseason once again while Atlanta looks to finish strong on the road.

The Night Atlanta United Turned the Tide

Miguel Almirón opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the match. He played a quick give-and-go with Miranchuk before poking the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Luka Gavran. This goal marked Almirón’s seventh of the season and Miranchuk’s eighth assist. The play showed the kind of sharp passing that had been missing during the long losing streak.

Cooper Sanchez made it 2-0 in the 40th minute after Almirón dribbled down the left sideline. A simple one-touch finish was achieved by Sanchez, who was left unmarked near the penalty spot by him. Miranchuk added the third goal in the 51st minute by cleaning up a rebound off the post. Lewis Morgan scored a late goal for Toronto in the 79th, but the damage was already done.

With this outcome, Atlanta (9-18-6) concluded a six-game home winless streak, per ESPN. For the sixth consecutive season, Toronto (9-12-12) was knocked out of playoff contention, The Associated Press stated. These numbers show a team that struggled for most of the year but found a spark at the end.

A Tough Road Ahead Against the Red Bulls

Both Atlanta and the New York Red Bulls are out of playoff contention for this season. The two teams will face off when Atlanta travels away to play the Red Bulls on Saturday. This match is a final test for both squads before the season ends. Neither side has anything to play for in terms of the standings, but pride remains on the line.

Atlanta United needs to prove this win was not just a fluke.
