U.S. striker Folarin Balogun is back in the lineup for Monaco. He has been added to the squad for the Conference League after scoring his first goal of the season. This move comes after weeks of uncertainty regarding his future with the club. The news breaks just as the team prepares for their next match in the 36-club league phase.
Balogun had been left out of the initial squad list due to pending transfer talks. Now his name appears among the forwards on the official UEFA website, according to Yahoo Sports. His return marks a fresh start after a difficult few months on and off the field. The striker finally found the net in a 3-1 loss to Paris FC on Sunday. He played as a substitute in that match, which was his first goal this season.
A Deal That Fell Apart
The path to this squad addition was rocky. Balogun was very close to joining Everton before the summer transfer window closed. A reported 40 million pounds ($54 million) deal was on the table for the transfer. The move collapsed on the last day of the window, which was Sept. 1 in most European leagues. Balogun pulled out because he felt uncomfortable with how the English club handled his medical exam. Doubts regarding his health were raised by the English club during that checkup. This hesitation cost him a move to a major league and left him with Monaco.
Monaco kept him off the Conference League list while they waited to see if the sale would happen. A league with an open transfer window remained a potential destination for the club to sell him to. That sale did not happen, so the club added him to the squad list. Ansu Fati is no longer on the list following an injury sustained during the Oct. 25 match against Lille. French daily L’Equipe reported that Fati is sidelined for two months.
Controversy and Leadership
Balogun has faced other challenges since the World Cup. A major controversy followed him after he received a red card in the round-of-32 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina. FIFA deferred his one-game suspension after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened. To determine if the red card could be reviewed, Trump phoned Gianni Infantino, who is the president of soccer’s world governing body. This action allowed Balogun to play in the round of 16.
Despite the chance to play, Balogun had a forgettable performance as the U.S. lost to Belgium. The striker remains the star player for the U.S. team despite these ups and downs. His ability to bounce back shows the mental toughness required at the highest level. It is not easy to handle pressure from a failed transfer and a red card in the same year. Yet he scored his first goal and got his spot back on the squad list.
In the Conference League, Monaco has secured victories in its first two matches. They beat CSKA Sofia and Freiburg in those opening matches. The team now looks ahead to more tough opponents in the league phase.
