Eight Cities Get Their Moment
MLS and Adidas just dropped a fresh batch of throwback kits for the Archive Collection. This new lineup spotlights eight teams celebrating the history of their local soccer scenes. The league says these designs honor the “nostalgia, pride, and passion of eight soccer cities that connect both past and present while honoring each club’s history, culture and identity,” according to a news release from Yahoo Sports MLS. You can grab these shirts right now at MLSstore.com.
Austin FC, CF Montréal, Chicago Fire FC, Houston Dynamo FC, Orlando City SC, Philadelphia Union, Real Salt Lake, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC make up the eight clubs joining this year’s roster. That brings the total count to twenty-three since the initial 2024 edition launched with five teams, plus the ten that showed up for the 2025 collection. The league’s pushing hard to stay connected to its roots while selling gear to die-hard supporters who love the old days.
Designs That Tell a Story
Every kit carries a specific story tied to the city or the team’s past. Austin FC swaps out its usual green and black to sport “The Violet Crown” for the first time. CF Montréal goes back to 1993, marking the first pro game the Impact played away from home. Chicago Fire FC pays homage to their 2000 away jersey, which featured a bold “CHICAGO” wordmark across the chest during a season they won the U.S. Open Cup.
Houston Dynamo FC marks the 20th anniversary of their first MLS Cup win with a design that includes the ceiling pattern of the Houston Astrodome. Orlando City SC unites decades of history with a 1980s wordmark and the Questra match ball design from the 1994 World Cup. The team unveiled the new cream-colored Philadelphia Union kit with a Liberty Bell entwined by a snake as a nod to the 90s, the era that provided Philly its leading edge.
Real Salt Lake uses its original “Real Salt Lake” jersey wordmark and highlights Utah’s ski culture, capturing “the main character energy of the mountains.” Vancouver Whitecaps FC looks back four decades to 1986 to honor the club originally founded as the Vancouver 86ers. Every shirt teaches local sports history that families can wear with pride.
Why Heritage Matters to Families
Wearing a shirt that honors the past holds real power. In a world that changes too fast, these kits give people a sense of place and identity. They remind us that communities have deep roots and that local history matters. When a child wears a retro jersey, they learn about the team before they were even born. This builds a bond between generations that new, flashy designs just cannot create.
The league is smart to lean into this. People want to feel connected to something bigger than themselves. These shirts function as symbols of loyalty and tradition. They show respect for the players and the fans who came before. It’s a good sign that the league understands that success comes from honoring the foundation it stands on.
For conservative families, this focus on history and local pride offers a welcome change. It keeps the focus on the community and the work that built it. The designs don’t try to be something they aren’t. They just tell the truth about the team and the city. That honesty is rare in sports today, and it is why these kits will sell.
